Access to dental services is one of the most pressing health care needs for children whose families cannot afford regular trips to the dentist.  Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease.  Nearly one in four children under five years of age already has cavities.  While the US baseline of cavities in children between 6-8 years old is 51%, Hawaii’s cavity rate for the same age range is a staggering 71%. Give Kids a Smile is part of the American Dental Association’s Action for Dental Health campaign focused on bringing preventive education and dental services to underserved children through local events across the country.

To shine a spotlight on this critical problem, approximately 30 members of the Hawaii Dental Association Young Dentist Group have volunteered their time to provide professional services at a number of scheduled, promoted events throughout the state.

The first educational event was on February 6, 2015, National Give Kids a Smile Day.  Other similar activities involving oral health awareness education take place in February during National Children’s Dental Health Month at selected public elementary schools on Oahu. This all leads up to our big annual event in mid to late February. During this event, Hawaii’s keiki receive free dental exams, cleanings, fluoride, education, and toothbrushes at thew Makahiki Dental Clinic.
